de Azevedo ABSTRACT Most failures in the tubes of superheaters and reheaters of utility boilers are due to creep strain, as a result of localized high temperatures. This work presents the predicted final superheater metal temperature, taking into account local convective and radiative heat transfer. The calculation procedure is based in the simulation of the combustion, flow, and heat transfer of a utility boiler furnace using a computational-fluid-dynamics-based model for pulverized coal combustion already extensively used. Two different conditions are simulated: without flow controller and with flow controllers in some superheater tubes. The results show that the flow controllers smooth out the temperature profile.
