Azevedo ABSTRACT This paper presents a numerical investigation on the impact of coal quality on the combustion process in a single-burner furnace under different operating conditions. Simulations were performed for a pilot plant-scale burner, comparing the use of a bituminous coal with a low volatile coal. Comparisons with experimental data show that the model qualitatively predicts the changes in burner performance. Parametric tests are performed to evaluate the importance of the transport airflow and temperature and the background radiation on ignition for both the pilot plant-scale burner and a full-scale burner.
