De Oliveira ABSTRACT Biofuels utilization has a considerable impact upon the environment, energy diversification, reduction of energy dependency, valorization of endogenous resources, etc. This paper addresses the issue of testing oleic sunflower methyl ester (SME) in large diesel engines. Engine performance was unaffected and fuel consumption was unaltered by the addition of oleic SME. Addition of oleic SME did not visibly affect exhaust gas opacity, but it did contribute to lower CO content. Despite the technical feasibility of SME utilization, the conditions towards SME production in Portugal are still quite limited.
