Elisashvili ABSTRACT Twenty-one strains of higher Basidiomycetes mushrooms belonging to 16 species of different taxonomic and ecological groups were compared for their lectin activity in submerged and solid-state fermentation (SSF) of agro-industrial wastes/by-products. No or very low hemagglutinating activity (HA) was revealed in Bjerkandera adusta, Lentinus edodes, Lenzites varnieri, Postia tephroleuca, Trametes ochracea, and T. versicolor. On the contrary, extremely high specific HA activity (166667 U mg−1) was revealed in the biomass of Ganoderma applanatum after SSF of lignocellulose. Lectin production is lignocellulose substrate dependent. Wheat straw appeared to be the most appropriate for the HA accumulation by Cerrena unicolor, ethanol production residue was an excellent substrate for lectin production by Funalia trogii, while wine bagasse ensured the highest specific HA of Forties fomentarius and Pseudotremella gibbosa. Furthermore, lignocellulose SSF is an appropriate method for lectin production. The determination of mushroom lectin sugar specificity showed that arabinose and mannose are the most widespread inhibitors of HA.
