Vaidya ABSTRACT Preliminary experiments to check anticarcinogenic activity using human cervical carcinoma cells (SiHa cells) were carried out with two species of Phansomba, Phellinus merrillii (Murr.) Ryv. and Ph. fastuosus (Lev.) Ryv. The study suggests that the hot and cold water extracts as well as hot and cold 50% ethanol extracts of these species show anticarcinogenic activity. Our studies revealed that cold and hot water extracts of Ph. merrillii, and cold and hot ethanol extracts of both species have high cytotoxic effect on SiHa cells. Ph. merrillii cold and hot water extracts demonstrated higher cytotoxic effect than those from Ph. fastuosus, while cold and hot ethanol extracts from both species entirely inhibited SiHa cell growth at a concentration of 500 mg.
