    ABSTRACT

Today, limb-saving surgery for oncology is used as treatment in about 70% of cases in which a malignant tumor is located in the axial skeleton. The goal is to cure the cancer, as well as to save the limb and its function. If the latter is possible is the main question in this review. We give a brief overview of the history of limb-saving surgery as it has been used during the last three decades. The functional evaluation, as used by the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, is studied, and several studies using this evaluation system are described. Furthermore, a novel approach toward a functional evaluation after limb-saving surgery is examined by the use of gait analysis and posturography. In this review, we try to answer many questions, in a rehabilitation context.
