Surface electromyography is widely used, but quantification has attracted much criticism. The aim of this review is to enumerate some methods of analysis, discuss studies of reliability that have been undertaken, and to examine the pitfalls. Studies of single motor unit activity using surface methods are presented, as well as some of the main applications of surface EMG, particularly those with a clinical significance.
