ABSTRACT
The age-related decline in aerobic capacity is associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, and it can lead to functional decline and dependence. The participation of older adults in aerobic exercise programs considerably improves health, physical fitness, quality of life, and natural independence. The present review provides a critical examination of aerobic exercise programs in aerobic capacity, as measured by VO2max and functional performance. Effective aerobic training programs increase VO2max by 6.6% to 30% in older adults. The gain in VO2max depends on the individual's characteristics and the components (mode, duration, length, frequency, and intensity) of the aerobic exercise program. Hence, aerobic exercise constitutes a suitable type of exercise for the development and/or maintenance of functional performance in older adults.
