    ABSTRACT

Biology of Synedra acus Kutz. var. radians (Kutz.) Hust. dominating in Lake Baikal was studied under culture conditions. This alga was isolated from plankton occurring under the ice. The alga easily adapted to culture conditions. Its reproduction was observed in both the liquid nutrient medium and the agar medium. During the process of reproduction, the intensity of illumination and temperature varied over a wide range. Temperature exerts more essential influence on the development of S. acus var. radians occurring in Lake Baikal than the intensity of illumination. The following conditions were found to be optimal for the reproduction of the alga: temperature 12−14 °C, illumination 4−6 thousand lx. It has been found that the tolerance of the alga to a prolonged exposure in the dark also depends on temperature: it decreased with increasing temperature. Variations in the concentration of iron and phosphorus in the environment dramatically affected the development of the alga. Under laboratory conditions, seasonal dynamics of the intensity of reproduction of S. acus var. radians was closely similar to that observed in nature.
