  • Water bloom in the northwestern part of the Black Sea: a review

  • ABSTRACT

Long-term data (1973-1997) on 135 cases of water bloom in the eutrophic northwestern part of the Black Sea are generalized. Representatives of five systematic divisions of algae (in all 41 species and infraspecific taxa) proved to be the agents of water bloom. According to the frequency of outbreaks in their abundant development, the species-agents are divided into three groups: (1) species responsible for 5-17 cases; (2) species responsible for 3-5 cases, and (3) taxa that caused 1-3 cases of water bloom. Water bloom occurred almost the whole year round in the surface layer of the sea subjected to the influence of freshwater drain. A decrease in the number of water bloom cases was observed from 1973-1980 (52 eases) to 1991-1997 (33 cases). The causes of abundant water blooms and their aftereffects on marine biota are discussed.
