ABSTRACT
The results of more than 100 years of study of the genus Chlamydomonas Ehr. in Ukraine are presented in this report. This genus is represented in the Ukrainian flora by 142 species (151 infraspecific taxa), or 32.3 % of chlamydomonads species known in the world flora. Thirty-four species and one variety were first described by Ukrainian phycologists from the water bodies and soils of Ukraine; among them, five taxa are endemics of the Ukrainian flora (including two conventionally endemic taxa). A new nomenclatural combination is proposed. Clamydomonas are represented most diversely in the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine; southward their diversity is sharply decreased. Ukrainian Pole'sye (forest zone) and the Forest-Steppe zone form a common clade (I - kj = 0.49); the Steppe zone (I - kj = 0.61) and the Ukrainian Carpathians (I - j = 0.66) successively add to it. Mountain Crimea is extremely poor in chlamydomonads and occupies an isolated position (I - kj = 0.87). The species composition of chamydomonads in the seas is poorly studied. Representatives of Chlamydomonas in Ukraine belong to three ecological groups: soil-aquatic (78 species, 54.9 %), aquatic (38 species, 26.8 %) and soil (26 species, 18.3 %). Soil-aquatic and aquatic species occur in oligo- (mostly), mixo- and euhaline water bodies, terrestrial ones prefer forest soils. Thirty-two species (34 infraspecific taxa including type ones) or 22.5 % of chlamydomonads represented in Ukraine, are indicators of water saprobity; most of them are b-mesosaprobes. Peculiarities of some species as indicators of water saprobity are discussed.
