Seasonal successions of phytoplankton were studied in two brackish bays, Gansvik Bay and Smitingen Bay, located off the eastern coast of Sweden. Some distinctions were found between phytoplankton communities occurring in these bays. Taking into account almost analogous physical and chemical conditions in both bays, it was concluded that standard procedures of sampling used in monitoring phytoplankton successions in coastal zones are not sufficiently advanced.
