The problem of major ecological groups of the river phytoplankton species revealed in a number of cases by compound complex gradients is discussed. Niche width indices are used. An attempt is made to construct a species gradient inside ecological groups by means of several chemical factors for the Belaya River phytoplankton using canonic ordination. The species spectrum is obtained from the concentration of ammonium nitrogen.
