Contribution of dominant species of the genus Cymbella Ag. to microphytobenthos of the southern part of Lake Baikal

ABSTRACT

Results of long-term studies on the genus Cymbella Ag. occurring in the littoral zone of the southern part of Lake Baikal are presented. The role of species of the genus Cymbella in the processes of production was estimated. The peculiarities of their zonal distribution, and also their seasonal and inter-annual dynamics, were investigated. The role of representatives of this genus in the communities of microphytobenthos was shown. Some peculiarities of the ecology of species of the genus Cymbella were characterized on the basis of long-term observations.
