    ABSTRACT

Four new taxa of the genus Stephanodiscus Ehr. (Bacillariophyta), studied under light (LM) and scanning electron microscopes (SEM), are described from the Lake Baikal sediments corresponding to the Brunhes chron in drill core BDP-96-2: Stephanodiscus compactus Khursevich et Fedenya, S. asteroides var. baicalensis Khursevich et Fedenya, S. binderanoides Khursevich et Fedenya and S. distinctus Khursevich var. excentricoides Khursevich. They are distinguished by dimensions of valves, pattern of areolation, number and placement of processes on the valve surface, as well as by the age range. Moreover, one new combination in the composition of this genus is given.
