DUAL-FUEL COMBUSTION WITH INJECTED NATURAL GAS AND DISTILLATE

ABSTRACT

Natural gas (NG) as an alternative fuel will be important for future road vehicles because of its excellent emission characteristics and plentiful supply. To use such a low cetane number fuel in truck diesel engines, the dual-fuel (DF) approach is necessary. To keep emissions low, the distillate quantity should be minimised at all times but this is difficult. To help development, good simulation of the DF process is required. A 3D model, which includes the complex interaction between the fuels during combustion, has been developed. Results compare well with experiment for both pre-mixed and injected NG. The former has been reported previously. For the latter, the importance of a high NG injection pressure, its timing and orientation relative to the distillate spray is now highlighted.
