ABSTRACT
A pseudospectral collocation method is developed to investigate the baroclinic steady waves occurring in a differentially heated rotating annulus. The coupling between the dynamic and thermal fields is accomplished using the Boussinesq approximation, applied to the Coriolis, centrifugal and buoyancy forces. First predictions obtained for a wave-3 flow in a water/glycerol-filled cavity show good agreement with results reported in the literature from a combined laboratory and numerical study. Extension to air-filled annular cavity will be undertaken to obtain a delineating regimes diagram.
