    ABSTRACT

Mean flow properties of turbulent magnetohydrodynamic channel flow with electrically insulating channel walls are studied using direct numerical simulations. The Lorentz force due to the wall-normal magnetic field is computed in the quasistatic approximation. For strong magnetic fields, the simulations show a three-layer structure of the mean velocity profile. A viscous region near each wall and a plateau in the middle are connected by logarithmic layers. For a fixed ratio of Reynolds- and Hartmann number, the velocity profiles approach a universal shape when plotted in wall units. Increasing the Hartmann number then merely causes a broadening of the plateau. This structure of the velocity profile is used to derive a phenomenological model for the friction coefficient as function of the Reynolds- and Hartmann numbers.
