ABSTRACT
In this article, Rayleigh-Bénard convection, and in particular numerical studies on its instabilities and transitions are discussed and reviewed. The discussion is limited to confined enclosures, that is, enclosures with side walls. The study discusses Rayleigh-Bénard convection for a wide variety of parameters, such as for large and small aspect ratio enclosures and high and low Prandtl number fluids. Relevant experimental studies are described as well.
