    ABSTRACT

    To enhance impinging jet heat transfer in a confined space, open-cellular porous plates consisting of Ag, Cu, Ni or Ni-Cr are considered as a heat sink. The porous plate is bounded by a heated surface and a circular confined wall, in which holed center a circular nozzle is vertically installed. The flow and mean transfer characteristics are measured by varying the porosity (Φ), the pores per inch (PPI) and the thickness of a porous plate (H) in the following ranges: 0.86 ≤ Φ ≤ 0.96, 8.5 ≤ PPI < 111 and 0.5 mm ≤ H ≤ 10mm. Results are presented in both graphical and analytical forms. Three kinds of performance ratio are introduced to evaluate degrees of the pressure drop increment and the heat transfer augmentation and a ratio between them. It is shown that heat transfer enhancement is achieved as long as the thickness of a porous plate is less than 3 mm, but the 2 mm thick Nickel porous plate with Φ = 0.914 and PPI = 30.5 is the most promising as a heat sink among the porous plates examined.
