    ABSTRACT

In this paper, a numerical study on an array of impinging jets is presented whereby geometrical parameters are identified to maximise heat transfer. The analysis considers both square and hexagonal array geometries. Closely packed jet arrays are numerically modelled for a range of jet-to-surface distances, jet-to-jet spacings and jet Reynolds numbers. The average surface Nusselt number at the jet surface is evaluated and used as the basis for optimising array configuration. Results indicate that, the array heat transfer steadily increases towards a peak as the spacing between jets is reduced and the jet Reynolds number is increased. However, beyond a certain critical distance, the array heat transfer dramatically falls with further increase in jet spacing. The flow characteristics determining this critical distance are examined with an explanation for the behaviour.
