    ABSTRACT

    In the present study, a numerical analysis of convection heat transfer in pulsating turbulent pipe flow over a wide range of Womersley number with large oscillating velocity amplitude (A > 1) is conducted. A two-dimensional model is established and numerically solved with the finite volume method and the SIMPLEC algorithm. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and a low-Reynolds-number k-ε turbulent model are applied in the turbulence modeling. Flow and heat transfer over a wide range of process parameters are investigated to reveal the velocity and temperature characteristics of the flow. The relationship between the heat transfer enhancement and the main processing parameters is investigated, and the mechanism of the heat transfer enhancement in pulsating turbulent flow is discussed. The model analysis indicates that besides Reynolds number and Prandtl number, Womersley number is also a very important parameter in the study of pulsating flow and heat transfer. The numerical analysis results show that in a pulsating turbulent flow there is an optimum Womersley number at which heat transfer is maximally enhanced. Both larger velocity oscillation amplitude and flow reversal in the pulsating turbulent flow also greatly promote heat transfer enhancement.
