    ABSTRACT

A turbulent axisymmetric air jet impinging on a flat plate was studied experimentally. Turbulence statistics of the jet flow and convection heat transfer characteristics when uniform heat flux was imposed in the plate were investigated. The jet from a long round pipe, 75 pipe diameters in length, at Reynolds number of 23 000, impinged vertically on a flat plate. This experimental condition was the same as those of Baughn and Shimizu (1989) and Cooper et al. (1993). Temperature statistics and heat transfer coefficient distributions were evaluated using cold wire thermometer and infrared thermography. From Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements, turbulence statistics and turbulent kinetic energy budget were analyzed. The result indicates that the origin of the secondary peak in the heat transfer coefficient distribution at a smaller jet to impingement plate spacing can be attributed to very pronounced shear production coupled with the external turbulence coming from the free jet. In the comparison of Nusselt number distribution for H/D = 2, 6 and 10 with prior data, a wide dispersion of magnitudes was found and was investigated by collecting experimental conditions of the literature. Some possible explanations are presented.
