    ABSTRACT

In this paper the results of transient response characteristics of condensing flow in vertical, downward direction, are reported. The overall surge characteristics of the outlet liquid flow rate, including flow reversals, to exponential changes in the inlet vapor flow rate were studied experimentally and were found to be similar to those observed on the horizontal flows. The System Mean Void Fraction model for horizontal flows was extended to include gravitational effects due to the flow orientation. The model predictions with and without the gravitational effects were compared. Also, the model predictions, in presence of the gravity, for the outlet liquid flow rate were compared to the experimental data. Good agreement was observed. The gravitational effects were observed to cause an attenuation in the amplitude of the outlet liquid flow surges in comparison to those in horizontal flow.
