    ABSTRACT

    This paper presents the modeling of a turbulent ethylene-air diffusion jet flame strongly dependent on the radiative transfer. An iterative coupled calculation based on a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes approach for the fluid phase, a Lagrangian modeling of soot formation and a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model has been performed. It converges after about 7 complete iterations. The calculation, during the Lagrangian step, of the joint probability density function of the reaction progress variable, of the mixture ratio and of the soot volume fraction allows us to account for the interaction between turbulence and radiation. This interaction increases the radiative heat loss by more than 20%. Its effects are important in the second half of the flame. The fraction of the emitted radiation self-absorbed in the flame is large, especially when the turbulence-radiation interaction is taken into account. About 40% of the emitted radiation is then self-absorbed.
