    ABSTRACT

Porous media is often represented by a regular repetition of a unit cell. However, certain porous media with complex geometry can be difficult to model successfully without an accurate representation of the media geometry. A specific case is the complex structure of graphitized carbon foams. There have been several attempts to develop analytical models of carbon foams as cellular materials. However, analytical models cannot take into account the interaction between the pores in the foam. In particular, the interaction between pores becomes quite complex in open pore foams. The present paper uses a true 3-dimensional structure of a carbon foam and develops a numerical model to determine its thermo-mechanical properties. It is shown that the 3-dimensional model produces values very different from idealized models.
