    ABSTRACT

The main objective of this paper is to show the development of a mechanistic procedure to calculate the mean non-boiling convective heat transfer coefficient in horizontal gas-liquid intermittent −or slug− flows. Starting from a mechanistic model for the slug flow, a procedure to calculate the mean convective heat transfer coefficient was worked out. Data taken in large and small-scale flow loops were used to access the flow hydrodynamics. The large-scale loop, 150 mm ID and 200 meters long, operated with gas and oil or gas and water mixtures. The small-scale loop, 25.4 mm ID and 15 meters long, operating with air-water mixtures for flow measurement was, subsequently, turned into a double pipe heat exchanger for heat transfer experimentation. Results provided by the flow and heat transfer mechanistic models were compared with known and recent referenced correlations and experimental data.
