    ABSTRACT

    The work presented describes an experimental investigation of an underexpanded supersonic jet. The experimental component begins with a Mie Scattering analysis, which is used to examine the basic shape and structure of the flow. Shadowgraphs are used to determine shock structure and Mach Disk locations. Particle Image Velocimetry is then used to obtain quantitative measurements of the velocity field. The flow is seeded with Aluminium Oxide solid particles via a cyclonic seeder for one set of measurements, and with olive oil through a Laskin nozzle for another. The effect of shock structures on the flow is evident, in agreement with previous experimental work. The cyclonic seeder is shown to perform poorly in this particular case, providing inconsistent seeding. A preliminary computational model in Fluent 6.0 shows qualitative agreement with the flow structure, however quantitative comparison is difficult due to imprecision in the experimental technique.
