    ABSTRACT

    The void fraction of graphite pellets has been investigated by use of a Raman spectroscopy. Graphite pellets composed of multi-modal graphite particles with the mean diameter of 6.51μm were made by handy oil hydraulic press whose pressure was changed in three steps from 9.8 to 29.4MPa. The thickness of each pellet was about 2mm. The apparent thermal conductivity of the pellets was measured from Raman spectrum shift of G-band, which had been pre-calibrated as a function of temperature. The void fraction was calculated with the thermal conductivity with Krupiczka's model for packed beds. From the results, the thermal conductivity of pellets increases with the pressure given to the pellets. This apparently corresponds to qualitative prediction that the void fraction reduction by press pressure causes to increase the thermal conductivity of pellets. The void fraction of each pellet calculated with Krupiczka's model is found to show good agreement with that calculated with the pellet density. From this, it is concluded the Raman spectroscopy method is one of effective methods for estimating the dispersion characteristics of graphite pellets.
