Interfacial tension and the temperature coefficient are important property when the marangoni convection in a crystal growth technique with a liquid encapsulation system is investigated in a laboratory, by substituting aforementioned model fluids for melts. Interfacial tension and its temperature coefficient between silicone oil and fluorinert were successfully measured by fitting an experimental drop profile to a theoretical one with the standard deviation of 0.007~0.4%. Relations between temperature and the interfacial tension were also obtained with good accuracy.
Then, a natural convection in the stratified layer of two immiscible liquids was investigated, using different pair of oils with the different temperature coefficients, in a rectangular tank. The velocity maps were obtained by using PIV. Even in a flow field dominated by buoyancy driven convection, the Marangoni force could affect the flow on the free surface and on the interface. The effect of the difference of the interfacial tension coefficient on the combined convection of the buoyancy-driven convection and the marangoni convection was investigated.
