    ABSTRACT

    This paper investigates theoretically the effect of a uniform radial magnetic field on the steady laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow and heat transfer characteristics from a horizontal circular cylinder placed in a viscous and incompressible electrically conducting fluid. Both cases of the assisting (heated cylinder) and opposing (cooled cylinder) flows are considered. The transformed basic non-dimensional boundary layer equations are solved numerically using an efficient implicit finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Results are obtained for different values of the mixed convection parameter λ, being positive for assisting flow and negative for opposing flow, respectively, and magnetic field or Hartmann parameter M with the Prandtl number Pr = 1. Results for M = 0 (absent magnetic field) are found to be in excellent agreement with previously reported results. Numerical results presented include heat transfer characteristics, namely the local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number in the form of tables and graphs.
