    ABSTRACT

The flow field and heat transfer characteristics of vertical mantle heat exchangers with a two pass flow configuration have been studied. A rectangular mantle was used as a simplified model for experimental flow visualisation and numerical investigation. The simulated flow field was found to be in good agreement with the experimental obtained dye streak lines and PIV measurements. As the mantle gap was increased from 3.5 mm to 20 mm, the effect of buoyancy in the mantle became significant in the direction normal to the forced flow. The transition between forced and natural convection heat transfer modes in the mantle was determined by quantifying the relative magnitude of the natural convection and forced convection effects.
