    ABSTRACT

Reducing electricity peak demand associated with space heating needs in Northern regions is important for the electricity providers as well as their clients. This can be realised by storing heat during the low demand hours and using this energy for space heating during peak hours. Hydro-Quebec's Energy Technologies Laboratory (LTE) designed a high temperature electric thermal storage (ETS) unit. This heat accumulator stores sensible heat up to 900°C. The objective of the present paper is to investigate the possibility of increasing the storage capacity of the LTE's unit by adding a phase change material (PCM) to the existing medium. Additions of NaCl and KCl salts were tested. Although the salts were compatible with the existing medium and could potentially increase the storage capacity, it wasn't possible to contain the PCMs adequately.
