    ABSTRACT

Comparison of optimal solutions for 7 × 7 pin-fins heat sink with different cross-sectional fin areas is performed by integrating the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and mathematical optimization technology. In the pin-fins heat sink, the optimum values of the design variables such as fin height (h), fin width or fin diameter (D), and fan-to-heat sink distance (c) can be achieved when the thermal resistance (θj) at the junction and the overall pressure drop (ΔP) are minimized simultaneously. To complete the optimization, the finite volume method for calculating the objective functions and SQP method for solving the constrained non-linear optimization problem are used.
