ABSTRACT The paper is focused on theoretical modeling of the combined thermal destruction and erosion of hypersonic vehicles in a dust-laden atmosphere. The mass entrainment model is applied based on the concept of the effective enthalpy of erosion destruction and pulsed layer-by-layer carryover of material in the process of collision with a cloud of particles. Some results of ground-based experiments directed on the study of the effective enthalpy of erosion − surface layer temperature dependence are discussed. Results of numerical simulation of the thermal-erosion destruction are presented for two types of thermal protection materials − fiber-glass plastic and carbon material. The cases of a monodisperse flow and of a two-sized admixture are considered. The impact of the temperature dependence of the effective enthalpy on the considered process at different determinative parameters is discussed.
