    ABSTRACT

A molecular dynamics study is conducted to understand the underlying physics on ultrashort pulsed laser ablation. Using the Lennard-Jones potential model, simulations have been performed for the pulse durations of 100 fs, 5 ps, and 100 ps FWHM. For the three different pulse durations, the whole process can be divided into two or three stages depending on their transport characteristics. The factors that affect the speed of melting and expansion are investigated considering the melting mechanism at various conditions. The mechanical expansion plays an important role in the ablation dominated by homogeneous nucleation.
