    ABSTRACT

During laser irradiation of biological tissue, a number of physical processes take place that determine temperature rises and thermal damage rates. A one-dimensional bio-heat transfer model, which is a multi-boundary Stefan problem in mathematics, is proposed to predict the temperature history in the tissue irradiated by highly absorbed laser. The model incorporates two heterogeneous materials, which are porous carbonization layer formed during the ablation process and bio-tissue layer, and two moving interfaces, i.e., ablation front and evaporation front. The thermal interaction process is numerically predicted by a finite difference approach. It is demonstrated that the laser-tissue ablation process includes two stages: the initial non-steady stage and the succeeding quasi-steady stage. Thermal ablation experiments in porcine muscle using CO2 laser irradiation are described and numerical results are compared to experimental data.
