ABSTRACT
This paper discusses an important future trend in the use of very high temperature gas cooled nuclear reactors. The process heat developed by such plants can be used in a range of ways not normally associated with nuclear power. In particular the massive scale manufacture of Hydrogen, using water as a feedstock is introduced. Current work programmes in the US, Europe, Japan, South Africa and Korea are briefly reviewed and some of the design problems requiring enhanced understanding of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer are summarised. The complexity of such installations and the need to maximize thermodynamic efficiency requires advances in modelling techniques and these are discussed further.
