ABSTRACT

Turbine rotor blades have internal coolant passages to extract the thermal energy conducted from the exposed (in hot combustion products) surfaces of blades. The flow and heat transfer in these coolant passages get significantly affected by the rotational forces: Coriolis and centrifugal forces. In the recent past, there has been a considerable progress in this research area and this paper summarizes the published contributions. This paper includes flow field in orthogonal rotation, heat transfer in rotating channels, and most importantly correlations for heat transfer coefficients in a rotating frame. The effects of rotation on smooth and ribbed channels, on thermal boundary conditions, and on the rib and channel orientation are discussed in detail.
