ABSTRACT Recent theories of bioheat transfer are described and their domains of validity are summarized. Solutions to the traditional bioheat transfer (Pennes) equation are discussed for selected cases. Analytical treatments of convective heat exchange in tissue which contain large and small caliber vessels are reviewed. A recently developed model for whole limb heat transfer and related experimental measurements are included as an example of bioheat transfer in perfused tissue containing discrete branching vessels. The beneficial effects of hypothermia as an adjunct to chemical cardioplegia for intraoperative protection of the heart and brain, and related maneuvers are discussed, based on analysis with the Pennes equation. The application of cryosurgery during resection of lung tumor is also discussed.
