EXTERNAL FLOW FILM BOILING
Larry C. Witte
Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Houston Houston, TX 77204-4792
ABSTRACT
The status of our understanding of the processes involved in flow film boiling from bodies that induce flow separation, causing subsequent formation of wakes behind them, is discussed in this article. Emphasis is upon cylinders and spheres because they are regular shapes that might be encountered in industrial applications, and are the easiest to use in experimentation. The nature of analytical/heoretical treatments of flow film boiling is discussed, and some examples of the governing equations and solution techniques are given. Emphasis is given, however, to correlations that have been developed to predict heat transfer rates from bodies undergoing flow film boiling. A brief discussion of the influence of liquid-solid contact on flow film boiling in the temperature range near the minimum heat flux condition is also presented.
