ABSTRACT

The recent development of fundamental studies and applications in plasma chemical thermophysics is reviewed, focussing on material conversion processes. After the discussions about equilibrium or nonequilibnum conditions, thermal (equilibrium) plasmas and non-thermal (nonequilibrium or cold) plasmas are then described intensively, including our own recent work. In the section on thermal plasmas, the validity of local thermal equilibrium, numerical analysis, measurement, boundary layer problem, heat transfer in plasma spraying, and new applications are included. Then, focussing especially on high-pressure nonequilibrium plasmas where recent developments are remarkable, the section on non-thermal plasma describes fundamental processes, various plasma sources of glow discharge, corona discharge, surface discharge, dielectric barrier (silent) discharge, and new techniques for the efficient formation of nonequilibrium plasma even at high pressures and their applications to material conversion processes. Future trends and recommendations are also discussed in both sections.
