ABSTRACT Surface scattering has received considerable attention in the last few decades with numerous papers and books written by investigators from many diverse areas of science and engineering. Perspectives and directions of surface scattering investigations vary significantly, and this review provides an integration of work conducted in the various disciplines. Theoretical studies, including both exact methods and approximate models, and experimental research are discussed with a concentration on theoretical approaches, experimental techniques, and applications. The influences of incident angle, incident wavelength, surface materials, and geometric parameters on surface reflection are presented. The domains of validity of the approximate models are discussed, and the regions of applicability are noted. Experimental findings from several independent facilities are also presented and compared.
