ABSTRACT

Along with the rapid growth of emerging technologies, clinical and industrial applications of bioheat and mass transfer have received a great deal of attention over the last 2 decades. The earliest mathematical expression for the thermal effect of blood flow, proposed 50 years ago by Pennes, has stimulated numerous in-depth studies in the area. The results have made a significant impact on our understanding of the microvascular transport mechanism in living tissues. In this chapter, the most recent developments of bioheat transfer modeling are discussed with the emphasis on experimental studies, conducted either in vivo or in vitro for examining the validity of these models.
