    ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews studies of condensation heat transfer of binary vapor mixtures with various flow and condensing surface conditions. Free convective condensation on a vertical plate has been studied experimentally and theoretically for azeotropic and nonazeotropic mixtures of R113−R114, R113−R11, PFP(C3H2F5OH)-H2O and TFE(CF3CH2OH)-H2O. The effects of the vapor-phase diffusion layer on the heat transfer have been clarified, and the heat transfer coefficient for both smooth and finned condensing plates has been predicted theoretically. Forced convective condensation has been investigated for condensation on the outside and the inside of cylindrical tubes. For condensation on the outside of tubes the heat transfer coefficient can be estimated precisely by theory based on the analogy between the heat and the mass transfer. For condensation on the inside of a vertical tube the enhancement of heat transfer by the finned surface is not effective on the vapor-side. Here the heat transfer coefficient has been predicted exactly by theory based on the assumption considering a well-mixing condition in the liquid film.
