    ABSTRACT

A review of the liquid crystal thermography technique for application to fluid medium and convective phase change system is presented. A brief history and working knowledge of liquid crystal followed by the quantitative information that can be obtained using liquid crystal thermography through a calibration of color to temperature, are presented. Imaging, choice of color space for image processing and method of calibration to relate color to temperature are central to the success of this technique. Discussions on the imaging technique, color space selection and a review of the calibrations performed by various researchers are therefore discussed in detail. The Liquid Crystal Thermography technique has been adopted in a wide ensemble of convection experiments. A review of the broad class of problems studied so far and their results, is presented. Applications of liquid crystal thermography to convective phase change systems, particularly to solidification experiments in cavities and simulated crystal growth experiments are discussed. Finally, extension of this technique to three-dimensional measurement is discussed.
