ABSTRACT
The paper reviews advances in the understanding of the physics of heat transfer processes in oscillating flow. The topic is becoming increasingly important in a whole range of applications, such as heat transfer enhancement, new refrigeration technologies, combustion, and biomedical devices. In the study of the properties of the complex, temporally and spatially varying flow structures and temperature fields in oscillating flows in a comprehensive manner, advanced experimental and computational tools have been applied. In the review special attention is devoted to the enhancement of heat transfer through self-sustained oscillations in grooved channels, the influence of oscillations on heat transfer in impinging and wall jets, the impact of sound on heat transfer, and enhanced diffusion. The differences between conventional boundary layer behavior and boundary layers in oscillating flow are highlighted.
