ABSTRACT This review provides a current summary of the status of Monte Carlo methods applied to radiative heat transfer in participating media. Unlike most previous comprehensive summaries of Monte Carlo techniques, the emphasis of this work is on methods for scattering processes. Monte Carlo approaches for spectral calculations will be reviewed with a focus on current methods to improve computational time and accuracy. New methods to incorporate path length-dependent absorption features are developed. Results for such problems and comparisons of the various formulations are presented. Directions for future research are also discussed.
