ABSTRACT
Impacting sprays have broad industrial applications; however, there is very little fundamental understanding in this area. In the past 10 years, substantial basic research has been performed around this subject. Numerical computation of impacting spray dynamics can be made with realistic and efficient modeling. Understanding of impaction dynamics under sprays is greatly improved. The systematical data base of impacting spray heat transfer is obtainable using newly invented, ideal spray generators. The heat transfer mechanisms of spray cooling on very hot surfaces have been revealed. The use of spray for low-temperature thermal control is also explored.
This chapter provides the insight of the above key developments and addresses the current status of these research frontiers. Directions of future research on this subject are also suggested.
