For the past 10 years, Thermal Plasma Processes meetings were organized in western European countries. In 1998, however, in agreement with the European Community, the
Russian Academy of Sciences, the High Temperature Material Processes Society, the French EDF Club Hautes Temperatures, the Technological University of St. Petersburg,
and Pierre et Marie Curie University, it was decided to organize the 1998 meeting in Russia.
This conference provided an opportunity for scientists and engineers to present the state of the art, promoted the exchange of knowledge between experts in various fields, and
allowed discussion of current problems and research needs.
The program had a good balance between fundamental research and applications, and it was a good opportunity to gather researchers from many universities and companies.
Two hundred and fifty participants representing many countries were present. The presentations were grouped into eight topics, each beginning with plenary and keynote
lectures.
The topics discussed included:
• Plasma torches and sources
• Modeling
• Diagnostics of plasma
• Surface and material treatments
• Plasma chemistry and low pressure plasma
• Transport properties - metallurgy
• Plasma waste treatment
